For many years my service to God took priority over my
relationship with Him, but for most of my recovery I have been in a
bubble. Most of my focus has been on me
and my recovery. I believe that I
needed this time. For the past few
years, I have done very little for me. I
have been so busy with life and serving others, that I neglected my mind, soul,
& body. Now is a season of
refueling. I’m so blessed to have this
time to truly be drenched in His presence, as He continues to mold me in the
woman I’m becoming.
As this step comes to a close, I’m realizing that I must venture outside of this bubble. In order to not get caught up in self centeredness, I must serve others. “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (John 13:14-15). These verses remind me that I must remain humble. The washing of feet was typically a servant’s job, yet Jesus was humble enough to pick up the towel and do just that.
How many times have I got so preoccupied
with my life, that I didn’t have time to help a friend in need. “When God’s children are in need, you
be the one to help them out … don’t just pretend that you love others; really
love them” (Romans 12:13). As I begin to imitate Him, I should be ready to kneel down and serve
wherever needed, not just the areas that sound good, or make me look good. “He must
become greater; I must become less” (John 3:30). Sometimes I forget that it’s not about what I
have done, but what He has done.
Another area that I tend to get sidetracked in is my desire
to great thing for Him. This in itself
isn’t bad. The problem is, I often
overlook the small things that I’m called to do.
If you're honest in small things,
you'll be honest in big things;
If you're a crook in small things,
you'll be a crook in big things.
If you're not honest in small jobs,
who will put you in charge of the store?
you'll be honest in big things;
If you're a crook in small things,
you'll be a crook in big things.
If you're not honest in small jobs,
who will put you in charge of the store?
(Luke 16:10 MSG)
It’s in the small things that ones faithfulness is truly
visible. Today, I’m challenged to pick
up the Lord’s towel and to serve others, wherever needed.
