Today the girls and I watched the Velveteen Rabbit. This is one of my favorite children’s
books. Though the movie is only inspired
by the book, it still holds true to the message: love makes us real.
At this point the movie starts to
sound like a CR lesson.
Skin Horse: “We are toys, a shadow
of reality.” (Realizing Powerlessness)
The Swan: “Cherish your time.”
John: “Don’t
you think it’s a little late for all of this.”
Nana, “It’s never too late.”
“There’s a big difference between imagining
he’s well and actually being well.
Ignoring this won’t make it go away.” (Denial)
Around this
time the dad realizes that he failed his son.
“I thought if I kept him far enough, if I just kept working, that I
wouldn’t feel anything, that I wouldn’t hurt.”
(Trying to do it alone)
Then Nana
replies. “Loving Him is worth the risk.
I have been hiding behind a proper appearance.
Toby has helped me come out of hiding.” (TURN)
In the movie, Toby gets very sick.
It’s amazing how tragedy causes people to change. Through devastating circumstances we finally
begin to understand, forgive, and love. It used to sadden me that it took a huge storm
to bring about healing in my family, but honestly I’m thankful for the
storm. I’ve never been this free. I’m
learning to surrender each area of my life to Him. And I’m learning not to take them back. It’s been a gradual transformation, but one
that has brought about peace and joy.
Near the end of the movie, the
doctor orders the contaminated toys to be burned. The Velveteen Rabbit is among the toys infested
with small pox germs, and is thrown into the fire. “Greater love hath no toy that he laid down
his life for his child.” Toby’s love for the rabbit is so great that he
cries out, “I love you, do you hear me?
I love you with all of my heart.”
His great love makes the rabbit become real. Similarly, God’s love for us makes us real. In return, we are to love one another. Christians are supposed to be
known for their love. That’s what makes us become life Him.
